Visiting Nassau, Bahamas: What to Expect on a Cruise Port Day

Arriving in Nassau, Bahamas by cruise is surprisingly smooth. If you wake up early, you’re rewarded with a front-row seat to sunrise as the island comes into view — pastel buildings, turquoise water, and the buzz of a busy port starting its day.

I grabbed breakfast onboard, packed my day bag, and got ready to disembark early. Nassau is one of the most popular cruise ports in the Caribbean, and starting your day prepared makes all the difference.

Choosing What to Do in Nassau

One of Nassau’s biggest draws is Atlantis Resort, home to the popular Aquaventure Water Park. The park features water slides, pools, aquariums, lagoons, and beaches, making it a great option for families or thrill-seekers.

That said, weather plays a big role. On my first visit, the beach was closed due to choppy water and high winds, which made snorkeling unsafe. It’s a reminder that large resort experiences don’t always guarantee ideal conditions.

On my second visit, I opted for something more immersive — a snorkeling excursion — and it ended up being the highlight of my day.

Snorkeling Excursion

I booked a snorkeling excursion in advance, which is highly recommended since spots fill quickly. Check-in was easy, located directly on the pier near the ship.

  • Arrived 15 minutes early
  • Departed right on time at 9:00 AM

Our guides were professional, informative, and made safety a clear priority throughout the trip.

First Reef Stop (Near Rose Island)

After about a 30-minute boat ride, we reached our first reef site near Rose Island. The water was slightly choppy but manageable, and the coral reef was vibrant and full of marine life. Schools of fish moved through the reef, making it a rewarding snorkeling experience.

Second Reef & Island Stop

The second stop featured calmer water and a quieter reef, followed by time to snorkel to a nearby island and relax on the beach. While there were fewer fish, the calm conditions made for an easy, enjoyable swim and a peaceful break.

Why I Preferred This Over Atlantis

This snorkeling experience felt far more personal and relaxing than a crowded waterpark. Being out on the open ocean, floating above coral reefs, and spending time on a quiet island beach made the day feel more authentic.

On the return trip, our guide pointed out historic Nassau landmarks along the shoreline, adding context and local insight I wouldn’t have gotten on my own.

I originally considered a catamaran snorkel tour but chose this excursion after reading reviews noting a lack of shade on some boats. This vessel had two decks, with the lower level providing shade — a big plus under the Bahamian sun.

  • Inflatable life jackets were required
  • Snorkel gear was well-sanitized
  • Snacks were available for purchase

👉 Insider Tip: Bring anti-nausea medication if you’re prone to seasickness, especially on choppier days.

The excursion lasted about three hours, returning us to the port around 12:30 PM.

Exploring Nassau After the Excursion

With all passengers required back onboard by 3:15 PM, I had a few hours left to explore town and visit the beach.

Downtown Nassau is lively and walkable, with:

  • Souvenir shops
  • Local restaurants
  • Friendly, welcoming locals

Junkanoo Beach: An Easy Walk from the Port

My final stop was Junkanoo Beach, located about a 10–15 minute walk from the cruise pier.

The walk itself felt safe and inviting, though hot and humid — sunscreen, a sunhat, and sunglasses are essential. Along the way, you’ll catch stunning views of Bahamian water that look straight out of a postcard.

Junkanoo Beach is popular due to its proximity to the port, so it can get crowded, but there’s still plenty of space and shaded seating available.

  • Calm water, ideal for swimming and water sports
  • Beach bars and restaurants nearby
  • Lively atmosphere with easy access back to the ship
